How Much Money are SWE Layoffs Actually Saving Big Tech Companies?

By Chris Talley, and Steven Zhang
April 24 2023
How much money are tech companies actually saving by reducing their workforces? WARNTracker looked at some of the detailed California WARN records filed by large tech companies. By combining these notices with salary data from levels.fyi, we came up with some estimates.

A few notes on this data:
  1. This is an approximation based on combining California WARN records with salary data from levels.fyi. Therefore, these numbers only reflect employees based in California who were affected
  2. This data is based on layoffs performed in late 2022 and early 2023
  3. This only reflects savings due to payroll. Additional savings also exist, from reduced benefits, payroll taxes, etc
Avg. cost is
an estimate sourced
from levels.fyi
